Japan national football team

Winger Ritsu Doan and midfielder Ao Tanaka helped Japan beat Spain 2-1 in their FIFA World Cup Group E match at Khalifa International Stadium on Thursday to advance to the knockout stages with Japan topping the group.

Japan will meet Croatia in the round of 16 while Spain, who finished second with four points, the same as Germany but bettered on goal difference, will play Morocco, who finished top of Group F.

Striker Alvaro Morata put Spain ahead in the 12th minute, heading home Cesar Azpilicueta's pass just inside the box for his third goal in three World Cup matches.

And Japan equalized three minutes after the start of the second half through Duan, who fired into the net directly from outside the penalty area, before Tanaka scored the winning goal in the 51st minute after the penalty was scored.

Approval of the goal after a lengthy examination of the VAR technique.
