"I feel humbled, honored, and frankly confused that so many people have listened to it and connected with our account of Joel and Ellie's journey," Neil Duckmann, executive producer of the series, said in a television interview.


He added, "HBO exceeded my already high expectations, and now we have the sheer joy of being able to do it again in Season 2 on everyone's behalf."

The move to renew the series was not a big surprise, as it was successful both publicly and critically. In addition to the strong reviews, which reach 97% of the approval rate on Rotten Tomatoes, the second episode reached 5.7 million viewers via HBO and HBO Max in the United States last Sunday. That's a 22% jump from the 4.7 million people who tuned in to the first episode, marking the largest increase in second-week audience for any drama series.


Moreover, HBO now says that the first episode has reached 22 million viewers domestically since its January 15 debut.
