British Academy Film Awards

Awards are held annually by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. It is the British equivalent of the Academy Award. As of 2008, it is being held at the Royal Opera House, having previously been staged at the Odeon cinema in Leicester Square. The 66th British Academy Film Awards was held on 10 February 2013.

It was founded in 1947 as the British Film Academy by a group of founders. In 1958, the Academy merged with the Directors and Television Producers Guild to form the Film and Television Association which eventually became the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in 1976. The BAFTA charity specializes in “supporting, developing and promoting motion picture art forms, by identifying and rewarding outstanding practitioners.” Inspiring and benefiting the public ». In addition to the high-profile awards offered by BAFTA, it also holds an annual program of educational events, film screenings and honors evenings. BAFTA support comes from the membership of 6,500 people interested in the film, television and video game industries. Academy awards come in the form of a theatrical mask designed by American sculptor Mitzi Cunliffe, commissioned by the Directors and Television Producers Guild during 1955.

Annual party

The ceremony is held annually in April or May, but since 2002 it has been held in February to precede the Academy Award ceremony. All nationalities compete for these awards, knowing that there are exceptional awards for distinguished British films, as well as distinguished British writer, director or producer. The Short Films and Short Animated Films Award is for British productions only. The awards ceremony is broadcast on British television, usually the following day. It is broadcast mostly on BBC One.
